V. THE DARK LADY
CHAPTER I: EQUINOX
“You are the guest of honor at the dance we are playing for you
Put down your scythe and dance round and round
One turn of a dance and then another
And you are no longer the lady of time.”
If you pass through Pinzolo (TN, Italy) you cannot fail to notice from the road the Church of San Vigilio which features a wonderful fresco from 1539 which has the Danse Macabre as its theme.
The fascination of Death gave birth to this iconography in the late Middle Ages and still today, after centuries, it seems to provoke us and touch sensitive chords of our being.
And the essence of this small collection of garments is given precisely by the aesthetics of the Danse Macabre and the representation of Death as the Black Lady, but also the other divine and often feminine representations linked to it.
In these garments I wanted to weave the influences of the Middle Ages and the Gothic style but keeping away from the aesthetics that today we define as “Gothic” or “dark”, preferring instead to draw from minimalism, from classical elegance, maintaining formal, modern and wearable lines although with “historical” references.
