RIVIERA
CHAPTER II: DOLCE VITA
“Smile, without a reason why
Love, as if you were a child
Smile, no matter what they tell you
Don’t listen to a word they say
‘Cause life is beautiful that way.”
In the second chapter of Riviera we go up from the beach to enter the garden of a villa on the shore.
Here everything echoes the classic theme of the Dolce Vita, of nostalgia for the worldly, carefree and romantic Italy of the past.
This theme, whose popularity has never waned abroad, seems to us Italians to be a cliché which we are often tired of. Yet it always returns, to remind us of such a different period, when everything seemed simpler, more spontaneous, fun.
In this very tired, turbulent age of ours, in which we feel obliged to take on all the serious issues of the world, we have completely lost our lightness of mind.
This collection, so banal, so already-seen, so cliché, is an invitation to return to that lost lightness.
The lightness of sky blue tulle, the playful boldness of a maxi colored flower print, the rounded cheerfulness of large tone-on-tone white buttons on a cotton jacquard top.
Lightness is not related to superficiality, unlike what superficial people claim; they mistake heaviness for depth of thought.
Massimo Gramellini
We are so deep now that we can no longer see anything. Going too deep, we have sunk. Only intelligence, intelligence which is also “lightness”, which knows how to be “light”, can hope to return to superficiality, to banality.
Leonardo Sciascia
